India Arts and Culture, Odisha

Raghuraj art village or town is about 30 to 45 minutes from Puri in the state of Odisha. The town is adorned with paintings on the wall.

We met a wonderful family generations running a school teaching children and adults to continue this traditional skills called “Pattachitra”.

It’s a creation of traditional art from visualisation and from historical ancient heritage depicting the life and story of God, Goddesses.

The family have been making promotions to keep this tradition going.

The creations are done either in palm leaf or cotton canvas which is made out of natural resources including the colours. The family uses sulphur and hermatite for natural colours, white stone to give the canvas the white base colour, imli (tamarind) as glue, water, cotton saree material, lamp wick made into kajal mix with wood apple as resin.

The cost ranges from very little to lakhs depending on the work.

Each piece may take around 2-3 months to more than a year.

We are very glad to meet this family and experience the tradition.

I would recommend this place to learn about traditional art making process. The painting is best viewed with double glass with frame to preserve the hand painting.

Below hand painting was purchased by me and ready for my wall.
